Founded in 2007, seek This Really Happened is a live storytelling event where participants tell true stories in front of an audience without notes. It has grown from an intimate group of friends to a showcase event held at various literary festivals across Canada. TRH also offers workshops in both community and corporate settings.
This Really Happened is curated and hosted by true-story true believers Maria Schamis Turner and Tally Abecassis.
Tally Abecassis’ documentary films, on subjects ranging from collecting to taxidermy competitions, have played at film festivals like SXSW, Full Frame, and Hot Docs, among others. She published the book Barbershops with photographer Claudine Sauvé. In addition to her film work, Tally is the host and producer of the critically acclaimed podcast First Day Back and is a member of The Heard, a group of independent podcasters. She is the founder, co-producer, and co-host of This Really Happened, the popular live storytelling series.
Maria Schamis Turner is a freelance writer and editor based in Montreal. She is vice-president of the Creative Nonfiction Collective and co-producer and co-host of This Really Happened. She is also associate producer of the podcast First Day Back. Maria has taught writing and storytelling to children at 826 Valencia, and personal essay and memoir writing to adults in Montreal, including at a workshop she designed for patients at the Montreal Neurological Institute.
